Introducing Princess Merida

The enchanted world of Disney brought us a big deal of adventures. Where else fair and beautiful princesses are looking for perilous adventures that often goes beyond the safety of their castle`s gates? Where else mermaids are longing to know how does the ground look like? Where else horses are able to float in the skies and queens to transform into fearceful bears?! Nowhere! Disney is our big world of joy and freedom where anyone can live the way they intend. However, not everyone, not even princesses who live in big castles, are able to do anything they want to. Even they are bounded by destiny and especially, by rules they have to obey. Isn`t that annoying when your parents tell you what to do? When you have to obey someone`s orders? It surely is. Even princesses have to go through this kind of hardships. And the Disney princess who knows it best is Merida. Princess Merida is the willful daughter of Queen Elinor and King Fergus who rule a kingdom somewhere in Scotland. From her early childhood, Merida inherited her father`s unruliness, loudness and obstinacy. She is always reluctant to obey orders and likes to everything in her own way. She also has triplets brothers who are also quite mischievous. As other mothers, Queen Elinor wanted her daughter to learn some princesses` etiquette. She expected her daughter to behave like a real princess. But Merida thinks that being a princess is not about fancy dresses, but rather about withstanding oppression and making your point clear. As she grows up, she becomes very energetic and simply falls in love with archery. Someday she would swiftly evade her castles with her horse Angus and practice archery for hours! Thus she became a skilled and talented bowman. When she reached the age of sixteen, her mother announced that three clans where coming to visit them. Each clan would present a suitor to compete for Merida`s hand in marriage. Later, Merida easily defeats the suitors in the archery contest her mother organized and claims that she doesn`t want to marry anyone. Like many other Disney princesses, she escapes her home. Within a dark wood, she found a witch that claimed she can turn her mother into a far better person who wouldn`t try to oppress Merida anymore. And that turns Queen Elinor into a… she-bear. What Merida`s character and story shows us is that we shouldn`t give up our opinions and dreams whatever it takes. But also, her story teaches us that trying to change someone you dislike is not a good way to solve your problems. Solving problems usually comes with acceptance and that should be learned.
